Stepping Stones is a participatory HIV prevention programme that aims to improve sexual health through building stronger, more gender equitable relationships.
We conducted a trial to assess the impact of Stepping Stones on the incidence of HIV and HSV-2 and sexual practices among men and women in rural areas in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
There was a difference between the actual and intended age of participants, which is discussed in detail elsewhere.13 Most were recruited from schools.
The presenter read aloud the study’s consent form to the 40 and gave an opportunity for questions.
The area has two sizeable towns, seven small towns, and many villages.
There are 12 hospitals, and most villages have a clinic that distributes free condoms.
Intervention Stepping Stones, a 50 hour programme, aims to improve sexual health by using participatory learning approaches to build knowledge, risk awareness, and communication skills and to stimulate critical reflection.
Villages were randomised to receive either this or a three hour intervention on HIV and safer sex.
